Position

This position is key in maintaining the entities’ legal status and understanding the financial viability and success of the model in the field. The role is multi-faceted, involving Strategy, Policy and Planning, Business Analytics, Finance, Reporting & Compliance, and supporting fundraising, knowledge, and partnerships. The primary responsibilities include:

Financial Planning and Analytics

The Trust facilitates safe, affordable water access while an independent field service entity provides the technical service support. We develop three-year plans for all the entities in advance and provide visibility to our donors and partners.

  • Participate in the annual budget process, including analysis and estimates of expenditures. Assemble, format, and perform a preliminary analysis of budget
  • Review the financial performance and quarterly projections along with the finance
  • Prepare budget presentation materials and financial reporting tools (i.e., Dashboard).
  • Review the intra-department budgets and make recommendations on the allocation of expenses to Develop and maintain allocation spreadsheets.
  • Update expenditure forecasts and ensure alignment with and revenue
  • Review existing reporting requirements and formats to suggest ways to improve efficiency and productivity
  • On a real-time basis, stay abreast of actual activity and developments that can impact individual unit
  • Ensure statutory filings, returns as well as financial books closure on time
  • Get statutory, donor, and US audits of our operations and smoothly closure the grants

Business Analytics of Safe Water Station financials:

iJal Station operates in nearly 350 communities by facilitating local entrepreneurs, SHGs, or communities in its operation, customer acquisition, and maintenance. We receive the monthly financials from all the stations. We classify these concerning local financial sustainability in operations, repayment of the capital, and generating some returns for the entrepreneurs. When clubbed with age and customer enrollment, this analysis provides us with a deeper understanding of the long-term sustainability or viability of the model. We also assess cluster viability through the development of:

  • Devise financial projections (P&L) at cluster and station levels for up to 5-20 years, as
  • Station financials on a monthly/quarterly basis to suggest any corrective action required in the field
  • Assist in the development of financial and operational models & improvements for eventual scale-up.
  • Provide general analytical support to the Program and Development teams on model
  • Own central operational, financial performance data repository and share country updates with
  • Reporting and Analysis of Station level financial to donors
Documentation & Sector Analysis

It is critical for us to diligently record our lessons (both success and failure with reasons) and share those transparently for the benefit of the sector at large involving:

  • Write field insights on an analysis drawn through financials and field
  • Developing a report on financial hurdles for scale-up in the sector to inform policy and merits of market- based approach for consumers at the bottom of the pyramid
  • Develop a brand ethos of quality, public safety, affordability, inclusion, service needs,
  • Understand the financial impact of our innovation, cost-benefit analysis, and payback on initiatives such as:
    • Solar off-grid solutions
    • Chilled water distribution
    • Water resource management interventions
  • Prepare standard operating procedures (SoPs) for financial processes in the office and
  • Developing sector analysis report of the field service entity and potential and plans for its success
Proposal development and donor financial reporting as well as assisting in fundraising with the financial sector

Financial data integration

To minimize the time in collecting vast information from the field, we continue to refine our tools. The field operators and mobilizers can input data on our cloud-based database through an easy interface of Android Tablets. We have, therefore, already developed some elementary tools for station financial data entry, complaint registration, daily volume, and consumer registration reporting apart from quality tracking purposes. The data thus collected from the field needs to be verified to ensure the integrity of online entries. Similarly, business analytics software needs are expanding, and the potential incumbent will lead the business analytics work in close coordination with the international resources. The responsibility also includes sharing financial data transparently with our licensors in the US.

Education / Experience / Skills Requirements
  • Certified Chartered Accountant / CFA with over fifteen years of experience in financial analysis and
  • Exceptional writing, communications, and critical thinking skills;
  • Strong presentation and report-writing skills;
  • The position requires frequent con calls with the NY team in late evenings / early mornings

Location and Reporting

The Head of Finance position operates out of the New Delhi office. It reports directly to the Trustee or VP. The current staff strength in the finance department is of six people. They are responsible for supporting the Manager in delivering on the above objectives.

Safe Water Network is a core donor of Safe Water Network India, and joint fundraising across offices is critical for success. The incumbent must liaise and collaborate closely with the CFO, who leads Safe Water Network’s International Finance team. Compensation will be commensurate with the experience and profile of the candidate and industry norms.

The position requires up to 15-25% travel in India and occasional travel abroad.

Position Background

This support staff position has been specifically designed to assist in meeting the donor project requirements. The work entails liaising with the Urban Local Bodies in designated cities. The incumbent will be responsible for all research-based activities pertaining to the project, on behalf of Safe Water Network India and participate in both primary as well as secondary-based research in the assigned cities of the project. 1.     Undertake research and develop report in making suggestive policy changes and strategies in favour of creating an enabling environment for small water enterprises (safe water stations/ATMs) as complementary solution to the Government’s piped water supply

2.     Undertake systematic and other reviews of key topics in WASH and environmental health, including on emerging issues

3.     Assist in developing internal and external communications for Safe Water Network India

4.     Support meetings of Safe Water Network India and Senior executives with the Heads of Governments, ministries, high level officials and senior representatives at district, state and central levels

5.     Support in all research and administrative tasks in development of Skill Development Centres in the designated states and cities

6.     Support in capacity-build and skill-based training sessions in periodic intervals

7.     Conduct necessary research related to building institutional and government structure in drinking water sector

8.     Oversee the design and implementation of the policy in drinking water

Functional Skill Requirements

·         Master’s qualification in public health, public health engineering or related disciplines from a reputed University

·         At least 7-8 years of related experience in WASH with excellent sector knowledge, domain expertise, report writing and project management.

·         Knowledge of technical writing requirements

·         Knowledge of the principles, terminology, and methodology of water sector content

·         Excellent technical writing and editing skills

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

·         Strong knowledge of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) issues

·         Ability to analyze and synthesize knowledge (inputs) into high quality reports / field insights

·         Ability to successful collaborate with others and work in teams, especially under pressure

Position Background

The position will serve as a technical writer in WASH with a special focus on drinking water and improved health for specific project requirements, spanning a wide range of geographical contexts. S/he will work collaboratively with the Delhi office team and report to Ms Pooja Singh, Head Knowledge manager position designed under the current donor project.

Key Responsibilities

1.     Serve as technical WASH writer for donor project requirements: policy, social, legal, regulatory

2.     Facilitate technical design sessions in order to set proposal strategy and criteria for successful development of sector assessment / reports / field insights

3.     Collect, integrate, and assure the quality of technical specialists and/or consultant contributions

4.     Support in development of assessment report sections as per project requirements and as per key topics in WASH and environmental health, including on emerging issues

5.     Develop policy-based / technical internal and external communications, as maybe needed

6.     Review, revise, and copy-edit sections of assessment reports, and integrate, as maybe needed

7.     Review, revise, edit, and improve the quality of materials written for donor projects

8.     Participate in technical reviews and incorporate feedback in a timely manner

9.     Review and integrate all background materials to ensure that the content written is compliant with all technical and formatting requirements of the donor

10.  Support the preparation and delivery of writing needed for annual conferences / seminars / workshops

11.  Liaise and coordinate with Delhi team, consultants, and partners to get/seek clear, complete, and timely inputs / feedback

·       In-depth knowledge and understanding of database and database management; e.g. data security, permissions, data recovery, and database monitoring, etc.

·       Excellent problem-solution attitude, communication skills (verbal & written) and organization skills
