Composite Water Index

The Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) has been developed  by NITI Aayog to reinforce the spirit of competitive and cooperative federalism in India. The index proposes a policy shift in water resource management from the conventional style of investment in major infrastructure projects to undertaking grassroots-level activities with the participation of local communities, which could ensure equitable access to water.

The document comprises the objective, scope, and structure of the index, water risks and related implications, thematic and indicator analysis, and state success stories.
